Preserving and Protecting Historic Plasterwork

From stately homes to hotels, theatres, and museums, our specialised skills are sought after to create bespoke, finely crafted fibrous, historic, and lime plasterwork. We take pride in preserving the originality and charm of every building, avoiding mass-produced solutions. Our master craftsmen ensure each detail is meticulously finished to the highest standards.

Ceiling surveys, reports and advisory services

With extensive experience in plaster renovations across public and private buildings, including historic churches, we offer a comprehensive ceiling survey and advisory service. Our qualified surveyors prioritise safety, conducting meticulous surveys to assess plaster ceiling conditions and identify issues such as unsuitable alterations and structural movement. We then provide a detailed report with recommendations to bring these features into compliance. For public theatre projects, we are also qualified to conduct surveys in accordance with ABTT guidelines.

Lath & Lime Plaster Repairs and Restoration

Locker & Riley are specialists in the reinstatement and repair of lath and lime plasterwork, bringing their extensive expertise to listed buildings and historically significant properties across the UK. Their work involves carefully restoring walls and ceilings using traditional methods, ensuring the preservation of heritage details.

Before commencing any restoration, Locker & Riley typically perform a detailed conditional survey. This survey assesses the condition of the existing lime plaster and timber laths, determining the appropriate course of action to ensure the long-term preservation of the building's historic features.

Programme considerations are essential due to the lengthy curing periods required by the lime carbonising. During the carbonisation period the immediate areas must not incur any vibration, often sterilising rooms above ceilings being restored.

In addition to walls and ceilings, Locker & Riley specialize in the reinstatement of lime plaster cornices and ornamental enrichments, restoring the architectural character of each building to its original splendour. Through a blend of traditional skills and careful attention to historical accuracy, they ensure that the plasterwork remains faithful to the building's heritage.
