Following the generous endowment left by the late Assistant John Robinson Locker & Riley were amongst a small selection of specialist trades to design a proposal for the Entrance Hall. It was the wish of John Robinson for the Entrance to reflect the rest of the Hall
Locker & Riley’s design submission was successful and the task of implementing the bespoke decorative plasterwork commenced.
Once the existing features of the room were carefully removed, Locker & Riley undertook a thorough survey to ensure the room’s dimensions and details were accurately documented. This precision was crucial for the design and installation phases that followed.
Initial sketches and concepts were developed, considering both aesthetics and functionality. These ideas were refined to create a design that optimized the use of the available space, while also ensuring the best use of the allocated endowment funds. The final design was approved by all stakeholders before moving forward.
The project was divided into two main areas:
- The first involved a flat ceiling design, complemented by a richly detailed cornice and a central feature.
- The second area, more complex, featured a dome ceiling with spandrel panels and intersecting enriched arches spread across two levels.
The dome ceiling was divided into 8 sections, each enriched with bespoke detailing, adding grandeur to the overall design.
A custom metal framing (MF) type grid was constructed to support the intricate design elements. All enrichments were modelled bespoke for this project, ensuring that the detailing remained true to the vision.
Where feasible, existing architectural elements were reused, both to maintain historical continuity and reduce material waste.
The installation was carried out during the COVID-19 pandemic, which required careful planning and coordination to adhere to safety protocols while still delivering the project on schedule.
